New Beginnings

About Me

My name is Brad Arnold and I’ve been an Amateur (HAM) Radio Operator since 2014. I had the original call of KM4DUK after obtaining my Technician License and later requested the vanity callsign of K4NHA which contains my grandfather’s initials who worked with radio many years ago. I currently hold a General class license. Professionally I’ve working in IT for almost 30 years and have been a Network Administrator for a large K-12 school system since 2007.

Time to Begin Again

I’ve been inactive in the hobby for a few years due to work, other projects, and allowing myself to get burned out from taking on too many roles and jobs in HAM Radio. I spent a lot of my time working digital modes, internet to RF connections, creating antennas, and building repeater controllers. I’ve very excited to get back into the hobby again and begin learning once again!

What will this Blog contain?

As mentioned above I enjoy digital modes and blending internet connections with radio since it suits my needs and falls in line with my career where I’m the Network Administrator for a large K-12 school system. Off-grid, mobile operations, DMR, and building antennas will be my primary focus to begin with. I won’t be officially contesting during Field Day 2025 however I will be testing a few radios and antennas operating from my 7’x14’ enclosed trailer.

From the Past

A few of my former projects will also be returning and updated with new informtaion and technology from today:

  • 1.25cm Repeater and Controller using modded TYT TH-9000 transceivers
  • Remote VHF/UHF base with frequency control – Likely using DMR this time
  • Remote controlled antenna deployment – Motorized tilt and/or pulley system

Current Equipment

My initial equipment setup is modest but will work nicely to get projects going:

  • Yaesu FT-891 HF
  • Yaesu FTM-400 VHF/UHF
  • Yaesu FTM-8800 VHF/UHF
  • Alinco DR-605T APRS/Winlink
  • Kenwood TM-D700 VHF/UHF/APRS (Favorite mobile radio ever!)
  • Icom ID-4100E VHF/UHF/D-STAR
