This isn’t a usual ham radio post and in fact has nothing to do with radio, it’s simply one of my other hobbies. This post is about EVE Online, the space-based MMORPG game.
Kubuntu vs Ubuntu
Since moving back to linux for all of my home uses I jumped into trying to get EVE Online working under Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I started with Kubuntu but the KDE Plasma x-window system is simply terrible to me so I went back to the old standard Gnome which is default in Ubuntu. I’ve been professionally managing Ubuntu and Debian based servers for over 15 years so using Ubuntu for my desktop came naturally.
EVE Online and Ubuntu
Getting this part to work was very easy. Make sure you’ve fully updated your system before beginning.
- Install the latest version of Steam and make sure Proton is enabled in Steam Settings and set to “Experimental”
- Install the EVE Online Launcher through Steam
- In the Launcher Settings uncheck “Use Hardware Accelleration”
- Also select “Download Full Game Client”
- Once the EVE Launcher is ready right-click on it and select “Properties”
- Add this to the Launcher Options: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 LD_PRELOAD= %command%
- Make sure Proton Experimental is selected
Done. You should now have no issue running EVE Online under Ubuntu or other Debian based distributions.
Profile Settings and Documents Location
One of the main issues I ran into was locating the correct folder where the account settings, character settings, and Documents were located. Here’s where to find them.
Account and Character Settings (replace $USER$ with your system’s username):
home/$USER$/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/8500/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/CCP/EVE/c_ccp_eve_tq_tranquility/settings_Default
Documents (Logs, Screeenshots, and Planetary Interaction Templates):
/home/$USER$/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/8500/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/EVE
