Yaesu FT-891 Powerpole Mod

One of the first modifications I’ve done on my new FT-891 was to swap the factory molex connector to Anderson powerpoles. Why? Because I HATE molex connectors. Yes they do work fine the majority of the time but without special tools they’re a large pain to repair when a pin starts loosening up. Working with molex connectors in the computer industry for 30-something years I’ve seen every part of a molex connector break at some point. Powerpole’s aren’t bulletproof but are much easier to repair or replace in the field, for me at least.

I 3D printed this STL by N0BOY from Thingiverse.

The install was straight forward and quite easy. The only difficult part is getting the interior piece onto the rear of the powerpoles since they need to be turned around 45° to lineup in the factory molex hole. Once aligned they fit perfectly and aren’t reliant on the 3D printed parts to secure them, they only keep them in place. So no issues with pushing the powerpole into the radio or pulling it out when disconnecting from power.
